Thanks to all 16 observers who came out for the Swift Sit last Thursday, August 13th. This included Monica Bryand of the Urban Bird Collective, one of the coordinators of the Chimney Swift Roost Monitoring Project in Minnesota. She told those gathered some interesting Swift facts, such as that they fly all day until they roost in the evening. Also, when it gets toward migration time, some roosts are abandoned as the Swifts join together to form a larger group at another roost. One of the reasons for the Project is that there is a lot we still do not understand about Chimney Swifts and their life cycle. This Thursday evening we watched approximately 123 Swifts enter the chimney of the Wenner building in Cold Spring. Thanks for joining us and sharing your passion, Monica!
