CMAS is participating in the Chimney Swift Roost Monitoring Project, a joint effort of the MN DNR, the Urban Bird Collective, and the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Community volunteers observe and report on chimney swift roost locations and roost use to help scientists understand the geographic distribution of chimney swifts in Minnesota. If you would like to participate, meet at the Cold Spring Subway parking lot at 30 minutes prior to sunset on the first and third Tuesdays of the month. Contact Dan Kneip (text 320-761-8202) for more information.
Another opportunity to observe the swifts at their roost is at Lastaedian Manor in Brainerd. If interested, contact Jim Millard (text 320-774-7051) for information.
See the calendar for information on our Swift Night Out on August 13th, where more of us will gather to observe together.
Another bird that community science volunteers are helping to increase in population is the bluebird. If you are interested in bluebird nest box monitoring at Kennedy School or St. John’s Arboretum, contact Jim Millard (text 320-774-7051) for information.
